To call classical, mechanistic, evolutionary, and relativistic forms of science “complementary” may very well miss a crucial point. They do not simply supplement one another nor are they “stages” in humanity’s increasing knowledge of nature, a knowledge that presumably “culminates” in modern science. This kind of thinking about the history of science is still very popular and often highly presumptuous in its elevation of all things modern and presumably free of speculation and “theology.” Actually, these different forms of science encompass different levels of natural development and differ in their avowed scope. They are not simply different “paradigms,” as Thomas Kuhn has argued, that radically replace one another.

and even thousands of years ago. The ordeal of the Key
and Bible, still in use, is a survival; the Midsummer bonfire
is a survival; the Breton peasants’ All Souls’ supper for

up of ancient habits is only one part of the transition
from old into new and changing times.

broadly the mental process by which savage men, having no
numerals as yet in their language, came to invent them? What was the origin of numerals not named with reference
to hands and feet, and especially of the numerals below five,

Christians of his dominions, under penalty of death or

having been tempted to excess of admiration for a woman,
had plucked out his offending eye. This man commanded
the mountain to remove, which it did to the terror of the
Khalif and all his people, and since then the anniversary of
the miracle has been kept holy. The Venetian traveller,
after the manner of mediæval writers, records the story
without a symptom of suspicion;[592] yet to our minds its
whole origin so obviously lies in three verses of St.
Matthew’s gospel, that it is needless to quote them.

Extratribal conquest, in effect, was to lead to the war chieftain’s aggrandizement with large private estates, often worked by their aboriginal inhabitants as serfs. As for the warrior societies that clustered around the chieftains, the most permanent spoils of battle and victory were the lands they carved out as their own demesnes — estates, in effect — which they then elaborated into an internal manorial hierarchy of villeins, tenants, serfs, and slaves. Judging from Mesoamerican data, the manorial economy eventually began to outweigh the capulli economy in sheer acreage and produce. Radiometric dating

All plants and animals take in radioactive and non-radioactive carbon when they eat and breathe. When they die, the carbon-14 in their wood and bone starts its radioactive decay process. In radiocarbon dating, the amounts of stable carbon and carbon-14 in a piece of bone or wood are counted. The ratio of stable carbon to carbon-14 is then used to calculate the date when the radioactive decay process started; in other words, the time when the plant or animal died.

Reversed polarity is when the magnetic “north” is near the geographic south pole. Using radiometric dates and measurements of the ancient magnetic polarity in volcanic and sedimentary rocks (termed paleomagnetism), geologists have been able to determine precisely when magnetic reversals occurred in the past. Combined observations of this type have led to the development of the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS) (Figure 6b). Geologists have established a set of principles that can be applied to sedimentary and volcanic rocks that are exposed at the Earth’s surface to determine the relative ages of geological events preserved in the rock record. For example, in the rocks exposed in the walls of the Grand Canyon (Figure 1) there are many horizontal layers, which are called strata. The study of strata is called stratigraphy, and using a few basic principles, it is possible to work out the relative ages of rocks.

In the block diagram, the sequence of geological events can be determined by using the relative-dating principles and known properties of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic rock (see Chapter 4, Chapter 5, and Chapter 6). Both the gneiss and fault A are cut by the igneous granitic intrusion called batholith B; its irregular caffmoscommunity outline suggests it is an igneous granitic intrusion emplaced as magma into the gneiss. Since batholith B cuts both the gneiss and fault A, batholith B is younger than the other two rock formations. Next, the gneiss, fault A, and batholith B were eroded forming a nonconformity as shown with the wavy line.

That linkage is critical, however, to a conception of democracy as incompatible with some individuals and groups having far greater influence over political outcomes than others. Such a picture of democracy is widely shared on the political left, but that fact should not obscure the fact that it is itself a normative account, and a relatively thick one at that. Though each of these explanations differs from Loughlin’s, it is possible to harmonize Loughlin’s account with those more focused on strategic incentives. Our investigation of the pronouns alone, a class almost always proclaimed to comprise function words, already supports the view that the distinction functioncontent words takes the form of a continuum. The range of U-scores for the pronouns stretches so far down that the classification of the whole class of pronouns as function words becomes untenable.Ga naar voetnoot27 Transferring some subclasses of pronouns to the content words does not seem a viable solution either, as all traditional subclasses show a substantial spread in U-scores. be made to figure in a moral apologue, an imagination so
little in keeping with his unethic nature jars upon the
reader’s mind. It thus appears that early ethnology is habitually expressed
in a metaphorical language, in which lands and
nations are personified, and their relations indicated by
terms of personal kinship. This description applies to
that important document of ancient ethnology, the table of
nations in the 10th chapter of Genesis. In some cases it is
a problem of minute and difficult criticism to distinguish
among its ancestral names those which are simply local or
national designations in personal form.
